I think the legal definition of “new” means that it was never titled.

Used as a dealer loaner, never registered, still has full factory warranty (minus the mileage)?

I recall at least one instance of selling an outboard off a rental boat, used only for part of a season, when a customer really wanted an engine right NOW and we just ordered another new one for the rental. It was treated as new for all purposes concerning the manufacturer and the customer. All parties were aware of the “used” status, too.

But then there’s my wife’s car which was a 2015, that we bought just a few months ago, with just under 8k miles - for 2/3 the price of a proper “new” car, so there’s that.

obviously the tech drove it from sweden to the dealership

(also dealership miles dont count as they dont cause wear and tear)

Tom addressed this recently, actually! But in my view, that sounds like it was a dealer loaner, or maybe one of the managers drove it - so it’s never been titled, but isn’t exactly ‘new’. VERY IMPORTANT to establish the ‘in service date’ and mileage for warranty purposes if you’re buying it.

Loaner car for dealer, technically never “owned”

If I remember right the dealer can use it in some way as a loaner and still have it be listed as not sold. So yes its legally “new”, not its not actually new. Its lame and it allows them to depreciate the asset as a business expense (if I remember right) but then sell it “as new”.

^ What he said. If the car has never been registered, it is still considered new.

Yup, my father bought a BMW that was a corporate car with 15,000 miles on it and it was “New” thought the price wasn’t.

Some states have mileage caps on “new” cars. Such as if the mileage reaches 10k despite never being title it would have to be sold as used. I would check your states laws so they aren’t saying one thing then you being forced to do another. Also many people are hitting the nail on the head. Car was probably never title and used as a business vehicle for dealership employees and loaner purposes. If the price is right and Volvo will honor full warranty, or you know what they won’t honor up front, I’d say go for it.

They are dealer loaner or manager demo cars basically. If you’re leasing I’d  say go for it because its a great deal and it doesnt matter if the loaner life shortened its lifespan because you’ll have it under warranty. If you’re buying I’d say stay away

Start Volvo dealership

Drive unbrought Volvo for 150k miles

Sell the ‘new’ Volvo at full price

Magic dealer miles mean no wear and tear

PROFIT! Drive someone else’s new Volvo before they’ve even brought it!

Well, since the warranty starts the day it’s sold to the first owner, that means you get that sweet factory warranty deeper into the potential mileage when more stuff is likely to begin to fail. Not a bad deal in that respect, but knowing how folks treat loaner cars... To quote Jeff Foxworthy, “it’s like going to a house of ill repute lookong for a wife”.

Was about to post the same - the benefit of buying this way would be a substantial discount on the price and the entirety of the warranty.  Downside would be wear on consumables.
